Despite declarations of America First, the United States under the Trump administration remains firmly entrenched in the Middle East. That engagement, however, is dominated by America’s military commitments and its focus on counter-terrorism, and it is marked by a distinct lack of strategic guidance and diplomatic support. While the military campaign against the Islamic State has seen significant gains, the broader dysfunction of the region endures, imperiling the prospects for future stability and raising the risks for damaging spillover.
